3 Questions to ask your Client at a Bridal Trial

Client profiling is one of the most important things we need to know how to do as a make-up artist. Giving the client the look they want while balancing the right products and methods for their skin texture, facial features and skin tone is important. Besides asking the client what they’re looking for, there are a few secret tips that we do to carry out client profiling. Here are our top tips. This is important when your client prefers you create a look for her without knowing what suits her best. Basically when you ask her: “What look would you like” and her answer is “I have no idea!”

What is your client’s personality like?

There has always been a relationship between your personality and the person you’d like to portray. How we would like to look like is an expression of ourselves. And these clues are often in small things that you can notice about your client when she walks in or when you meet her for the first time. It could be in her clothing or what bag she carries, or even how she carries herself or her current make-up that she’s wearing when she meets you. Look out and notice these small things about your client and she just might be surprised once you hit right the perfect look that she’s looking for – without the need to actually tell you.

How hydrated is their skin?

When you’re having a bridal trial, one of the number one things to note is how hydrated your client’s skin is. When you’re applying your skin prep or removing residue before getting started, have a feel of the skin. If it feels tight and rough, it is dry and you should be ready to get out hydrating serums and primers. If you’re doing your trial in advance of the date, kindly let your client know to amp up hydration in the days coming to the big day by applying masks, getting a better moisturiser and even drinking more water. The last thing we want is not to be prepared because the number one reason foundation becomes patchy or cracks is because of dry skin.

How often do they wear make-up? What is their typical routine like?

Whenever I meet a client for the first time, I always ask them what their current make-up routine is like – even what type of foundation they normally wear. This will give you all the clues. If she replies and says her routine is the bare minimum and she never wears makeup – you know to go light with the coverage and not too intense with the makeup. If she says she watches every youtube video, wears full glam everyday and knows what looks best for you – you generally know what you’re going to do next.

At the end of the day, understanding your client and what she wants is paramount to creating the look that she loves best. If you don’t have to guess – don’t! Ask her to find pictures of the looks that she likes to have a better idea and feel.
