3 Reasons Why Eyeshadow Creases

Eyeshadow is an extremely important part to any make-up look and although getting the correct colour combination is another feat on it’s own, a huge problem is creasing or patchiness when the eye make-up is applied. Here are our top reasons and tips to prevent caking, creasing and patchy eyeshadow. When we teach eyes during our makeup course in Singapore called the Artist Course, we are sure to include these tips.

#1 Prep the Eye Smoothly

The largest reason why eyeshadow becomes cakey or patchy is because your eyeshadow base has not been applied smoothly. As a make-up artist, you should never apply your eyeshadow onto clean skin. There needs to be some sort of makeup layer to boost colour of the shadow and make it last longer. Imagine slapping eyeshadow onto clean skin. To do this, you need some sort of eyeshadow base like a concealer or eyelid primer.

A common misperception is that people think you need too much or too little eyeshadow base. They’re also not careful to get into the smallest areas when applying – for example in between eyelashes or up to the brow bone. This results in a very patchy eyeshadow base and patchy eyeshadow.

Ensure that your base is applied, smoothly and evenly and in total. This will ensure that your eyeshadow application is even.

#2 Take note of Skin Texture

Another common misconception is that skin texture only applies to the main part of the face. This is not true. If you have oily skin, you will have oily eyelids as well and if you have dry skin or eczema, it will normally show up on the lids. When applying your eyeshadow base, you must take note of the skin type on the lids and be careful which base you choose.

If you have oily skin of the lids, opt for a matte concealer. If you have dry skin, you need a normal concealer and avoid using a traditional eyeshadow base as it’s paste like consistency will collect in the dry areas of the skin.

#3 About Oil and Lines

If you have large oily eyelids, chances you will find your eye looks creasing is large. The product will settle into the fine lines and creases of the eye. To counteract this, simply set the eyes with a loose powder after you have applied a matte concealer or eyelid primer. Make sure to also pack your eyeshadow on as opposed to sweeping it on and make it soft instead with your blending brush.
